September Meeting

Our first meeting of the 2012/2013 school year provided our members with information from Alberta Education regarding the upcoming changes to the curriculum.  Joan Engel, Executive Director Planning and Standards Education and Merla Bolender Executive Director Programs of Study and Resources Education spoke about "Bringing Inspiring Education to Life" through curriculum redesign.  They explained that the new framework for student learning focuses on 3 "E's" - Engaged Thinkers and Ethical Citizens with an Entrepreneurial Spirit.  This is all achieved  through different subject areas.  They presented a timetable for implementations of the changes, with September 2014 being the target for transition to the operations.
Ms. Engel and Ms. Bolender encouraged members to continue the discussion with other parents, to help with the explanation of the changes as well as to bring diverse backgrounds together.
They provided members with several handouts, which can also be found online:

Framework for Student Learning - A good resource to share with your school council - the graphic representation of the implementation of the 3 E's is a good visual to see how it all comes together.

Inspiring Education - A Dialogue With Albertans - this Steering Committee Report outlines the long-term vision for Alberta's education system.  It provides a more in-depth look at the basis of the Framework for Student Learning.

For the latest updates and future planning, they provided this document.
