Learn what Alberta leadership candidates think about education.

At the end of April, CAPSC distributed education related questionnaires to all of the provincial political leadership candidates who had declared their intention to run.  Responses submitted to date are available here.

Participate in CAPSC!

Please communicate details of responses from MLAs or any other government officials
to us.  A repository of elected officials’ opinions and insights will impact key messaging related to public education for CAPSC and its members.

Observe what is going on in your community and especially at your school.  Send
your observations to CAPSC.  Share with us what is said related to this issue at your school council meetings, conversations with friends and family, email, facebook and twitter.   Let us know what your MLA is communicating about education (ie: maybe they wrote a column for the local community newsletter).  The more info we have, the more we can do!

Share any data/research related to public education.  The effective use of this information helps convey our message to government and the public at large.  It complements the personal stories and anectodates.  Overall, it helps us gain supporters.

WHAT IS CAPSC DOING?

- Developing a focused advocacy strategy to share with and support school councils – check back frequently,

- Supporting grassroots advocacy efforts and action plans by getting the word out,

- Blogging to keep school councils current and providing opportunities to share their critical analysis of issues online,

- Facilitating networking, information sharing, and brain storming opportunities with school councils by hosting monthly meetings (our last meeting of the 2010-2011 school year took place Wednesday, May 18.  Stay tuned and we hope you'll join us next year!),

- Providing media with a parent perspective, and

- Building a coalition of similarly focused groups to present a united front in support of predictable, stable funding for education.

About Us

HOW CAPSC CAN HELP YOU...

The Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils is Calgary’s city wide, public school (CBE), school council association.  Our goals are to keep parents and school councils up to date and involved in their children’s education, and to help make individual school councils as effective as possible.

We strive to provide resources, information and support to all CBE school councils.  We offer monthly meetings, a free monthly e-newsletter, web-based resources, and individualized school council support.

In the 2010-2011 school year, we hosted:
     - seven all-candidate meetings during the
lead up to the CBE Trustee election.
     - a Q&A with CBE's new Chief Superintendent,
       Naomi Johnson,
     - a Q&A with Minister of Education, David
       Hancock
     - a discussion about upcoming changes to
       Special Education, with expert panelists
       from Alberta Education
     - monthly meetings with expert CBE, Alberta
       Education and community presenters on
a wide range of relevant, education related
       topics.
